Benefits of Plant-Based
Protein-Rich Foods

HIGH PROTEIN CONTENT IS TRENDY RIGHT NOW.

You've probably read lots and lots of information about protein; after all, high-protein diets are very popular right now. Maybe you've even incorporated more protein into your own diet and noticed some benefits.

So now you might be wondering: if protein-rich foods are part of a healthy diet for people, should you also choose plant-based protein-rich foods? Does such a thing exist? And if so, will using protein-rich fertilizers make your plants produce fruits and vegetables that contain more proteins? Wonder no more—we have all the answers you need.

Most plant-based foods contain three main ingredients: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). In every fertilizer package, you will see three numbered values, such as 11-3-8 on the plant nutrition box. These numbers are sometimes called NPK numbers and correspond to the percentages of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the fertilizer. Protein-rich plant-based foods will have a higher "N" number than those with less protein. This is particularly true among organic plant-based foods. For example, a plant-based food with 10-3-2 will contain more proteins than a 4-3-2 fertilizer.

DOES THE SOURCE OF PROTEIN IN PLANT-BASED PROTEIN-RICH FOODS MATTER?.

Yes! There are many sources of nitrogen that can be used to produce plant foods, but not all offer the same benefits to plants. Edible plants require nutrients in different amounts and types than flowering plants, so specific formulas have been developed and tested for each.

Here's a bit of interesting information: Did you know that when you use organic fertilizer, you are actually feeding the soil, not the plants? That's right! Plant food is actually food for the microbes that live in the soil surrounding the roots of the plants.
Family mentioned to you that the soil helps plants digest their food and stay healthy, but for that to happen, soil microbes need to be fed.

DO PLANTS REALLY NEED PLANT-BASED PROTEIN-RICH FOODS?

Do you want strong and vigorous plants that produce large flowers and abundant harvests? Then the answer is yes! Providing soil microbes with plant-based protein-rich food will ensure a steady supply of nutrients to your plants, enabling them to produce their own proteins and helping you avoid many issues related to poor nutrition. There are also other important benefits, such as:

DO PLANT-BASED PROTEIN-RICH FOODS RESULT IN A PROTEIN-RICH HARVEST?

Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. Plant-based protein-rich foods do not directly result in protein-rich plants. Therefore, a tomato grown with plant-based protein-rich foods will not necessarily be a protein-rich tomato. But that same tomato plant will produce for a longer time and give you a larger harvest. In other words, when you use plant-based protein-rich foods, over time, you'll get more out of your plants.
This brings us to the big question: Are plant-based protein-rich foods worth it? The answer is a resounding yes! Plant-based protein-rich foods can make gardening easier by feeding the soil in a way that produces stronger and more productive plants, and isn't that what every home gardener hopes for?
