START REJUVENATING YOUR GARDEN WITH SOME OF THE EASIEST-TO-GROW VEGETABLES, HERBS, AND FLOWERS.
Growing vegetables, herbs, and flowers doesn't have to be difficult. By focusing on plants that are relatively easy to cultivate, you'll increase your chances of success, even if you're new to gardening. All you need to grow these low-maintenance plants is sunlight, good soil, regular watering, and some plant food.
To maximize your chances of success, it's important to use a combination of high-quality soil and proper plant nutrition. Try growing in containers (it simplifies the process) and use Plant Force+ to help protect the plants from over or under-watering.
When growing vegetables and herbs, your job will be even easier if you plant vigorous young plants instead of seeds. Starting a garden with young plants accelerates the process, allowing you to harvest earlier than if you were planting seeds.
Here are some of the best plants for beginners:
VEGETABLES
LEAF LETTUCE:
Leaf lettuce varieties like butterhead, romaine, and red leaf mature relatively quickly, and you can start harvesting as soon as the leaves are large enough to nibble on.
Lettuces grow well in containers, with shallow roots that don't require deep pots to thrive.
RADISHES:
One of the fastest crops to mature, radishes are ready to harvest in about three weeks. (As a bonus, you can eat the leaf tips as if they were vegetables). Since radishes grow very quickly, instead of planting all the seeds at once, try sowing some every week or two so you can continuously harvest for a while. Radishes thrive both in beds and in containers.
CLIMBING PEAS:
These grow quickly in spring. Plant them along a fence or trellis so they can climb and be easier to harvest. Once the summer heat arrives, and the plants have finished producing, remove the pea vines and plant beans in their place. Both vegetables also grow well in containers.
HERBS
BASIL:
This beautiful herb loves warm weather, so plant it once the frosty nights have passed. Be sure to remove the flower buds so the plant continues producing tasty leaves.
ROSEMARY:
This versatile and authentic herb is also one of the best plants for beginners. It grows well in pots or in the ground and can withstand periods of drought once mature. Rosemary is a Mediterranean herb, so it thrives in warmth.
CHIVES:
No special treatment is required for chives! Trim them regularly with a "haircut" by cutting the top third of the plant. The flowers are also edible.
FLOWERS
MARIGOLDS:
These bright flowers tolerate heat well and bloom throughout the season, even until frost. Remove dead flowers to encourage new growth.
ZINNIAS:
Zinnias will grow without any special treatment. You may need to tie tall varieties to a stake to prevent them from falling over. Remove dead flowers.
COSMOS:
These daisy-like flowers thrive in a wide range of soils and can withstand drought once they mature. They love warm weather, so wait to plant until all chances of frost have passed.
