The Joy of Gardening in the Rain

DON'T LET A BIT OF WET WEATHER KEEP YOU FROM ENJOYING YOUR BELOVED PLANTS.

Come on, let's admit it, everyone enjoys a rainy day now and then. But when the rain falls on the day (or several days) you had planned to enjoy the garden, it can be a bit disheartening. However, from our perspective, rain and gardening can be a fabulous combination.

Here are some unexpected ways you can take advantage of the rain in your garden:

Say goodbye to pesky weeds, as they are much easier to pull when the soil is soggy.

If you've ever tried to dig a hole in soil as hard as a rock, you'll know it's harder than putting a toddler in a car seat.

A rainy day is the perfect time to install stakes, solid trellis posts, or sturdy fences around the garden.

Humid weather is ideal for planting fruit vines like strawberries and raspberries. They love the rain (and a bit of frost doesn't bother them either).

Indoor vegetable and herb seedlings transplant more easily into moist soil not exposed to the scorching sun.

Give it a precise touch. We all love a garden bed with clear edges. When you cut the edges of damp soil, it feels as easy as cutting hot butter with a knife.

Your shrubs, perennials, and trees need nutrients just like you do, so apply some fertilizer, such as Plant Force+ plant food, and let the rain work its magic. Plant nutrient spikes are also an excellent choice on rainy days, as they are easier to introduce into moist soil.

Observe where rainwater accumulates in sad areas (away from the house) and then create a rain garden using native plants with well-developed roots.

Celebrate the rains. After returning home from your wet garden, put on something dry, pour your favorite drink, sit back, and enjoy while Sinatra sings "A Garden in the Rain."
