Why you Should Apply Mulch

LEARN ABOUT ONE OF THE BEST THINGS YOU CAN DO IN YOUR GARDEN: ¡COVER IT WITH MULCH OR COMPOST!

Folks, adding mulch to your garden and landscape makes your plantings look authentic, beautiful, and fabulous. It accomplishes many wonderful things for both plants and the soil. So today, I'll show you why mulch could be considered the gardener's best friend:

You'll have to weed less. When you cover the soil with mulch, sunlight can't reach weed seeds, so many won't germinate. Weeds that manage to enter and settle in the mulch can sprout, but they'll be much easier to eliminate.

You won't need to water as much. A layer of garden mulch helps the soil retain moisture for longer since the sun's heat won't scorch the top layers of soil. When it rains, that same layer of mulch helps slow down rainwater runoff. Garden mulch also helps prevent soil compaction during rain, keeping the soil light and fluffy, which is essential for healthy root systems.

Did you know that plants get help in fighting diseases? Many plant diseases start in the soil and spread through raindrop splashes. A layer of mulch acts as a buffer between the soil and the leaves to help prevent disease spread. Moreover, it can keep crops like lettuce, leafy greens, and cabbage cleaner. If you add Plant Force+, your beautiful plants will be free from any disease and pests.

HOW TO APPLY MULCH

Apply mulch in a 2 to 3-inch thick layer around your plants, but not directly on top. (Always make sure to read the product label for detailed instructions.) Use a thinner layer in colder regions and/or in heavy, moisture-retaining soil. Use a thicker layer in warmer regions and/or in sandy, quickly drying soil. Never apply mulch against plant stems, tree trunks, or the crowns of perennial plants, as it can block air circulation.

Folks, in colder regions, the best time to apply mulch is late spring, after the soil has warmed and before the summer heat arrives. In late autumn, after the soil freezes, apply additional mulch around the plants you want to protect during the winter, like roses or tender perennials. In warmer regions, be sure to lay down mulch before the summer heat sets in.

In fact, it's amazing how just adding a layer of mulch can do so much for your garden.
